In our interview at NYCC 2024, Kingston shared insights about his journey, his passion for storytelling, and how he navigates today’s geek culture landscape.
The Intersection of Wrestling and Comics
Michael Kingston’s creative journey began when he first discovered professional wrestling as a child. Kingston vividly recalls the moment that ignited his passion:
“The first Saturday night’s main event… I flipped through channels and was captivated by Barry Windham, Mike Rotundo, and the Iron Sheik. I was hooked!”

Kingston excels at capturing this unique blend of wrestling narratives and comic book artistry, and it’s clear that his contributions to the genre are not only entertaining but also significant in the context of modern geek culture.
A Shift in Perception: The Cool Factor of Wrestling
During the interview, Kingston discussed the evolution of how wrestling fans are perceived today, noting a significant shift that has made it more acceptable to embrace and express one’s passion for wrestling.
Kingston pointed out that wrestling has achieved a level of mainstream acceptance, akin to the Hogan and Austin eras. Wrestling has woven itself into the broader cultural fabric and is now celebrated rather than mocked. His perspective reflects a larger trend in today’s fandom—one where diverse interests can coexist and flourish without the stigma that often accompanied them in the past.
The Allure of Conventions
Comic Con and similar conventions have become the meeting grounds for fans, artists, and creators alike. Kingston has been a part of the convention scene since 2007, showcasing his work and connecting with fans over shared interests. He noted the exciting dynamics that conventions offer- allowing him to interact with fans not only from the comic book community but also from the wrestling world and creating a unique crossover within the vibrant, sometimes outlandish atmosphere of these events.
New Projects and Innovations
In our interview, Kingston describes his comic Vampiro: Rockabilly Apocalypse. This project stands out by defying expectations and conventions- diverting from classic wrestling storylines and focusing on a story about an underground rockabilly guitarist battling monsters post-concert. The narrative is packed with bizarre and imaginative elements, such as nuns on motorcycles chasing the protagonist as Kingston aims to engage readers with unexpected twists and humor.
Reviews for the comic (including mine!) have been overwhelmingly positive, validating Kingston’s unique approach to storytelling within this genre. These imaginative ideas showcase Kingston’s commitment to exploring unconventional narratives that resonate deeply with audiences.
His latest project, Friday Night Bigfoot, has since arrived on Kickstarter. Cowritten with Dave ‘Gangrel’ Heath, this newest project continues to explore new ways of merging wrestling culture into comic book form.
“In 1985, a Portland wrestling promoter recruits Bigfoot to save his family’s struggling promotion. Can Bigfoot help turn the tide in a bitter wrestling war? And afteryears of living in the wilderness, can the fabled cryptid handle being thrust into the spotlight?”

This series promises to be as full of captivating storyline and engaging characters as their previous work, make sure to check it out now!
